Abstract
"For the past four years (1981-84) efforts have been underway to rebuild anadromous fish stocks of the St. Croix River, particularly Atlantic Salmon. Expanded interest in St. Croix River salmon has resulted from improvements in water quality due to the installation of more efficient pollution abatement facilities at the Georgia Pacific Pulp and Paper Mill at Woodland, Maine, and to the construction of a more effective fishway at Milltown Hydroelectric Station.
A modest stocking program employing juvenile Atlantic salmon produced at Green Lake National Fish Hatchery in the State of Maine, and a smolt tagging (hatchery) program, combined with the operation of fish counting facilities at Milltown Fishway have been underway since 1981. These efforts in addition to producing more returning adult salmon, are aimed at determining return rates and harvesting of adult salmon from tagged smolts released in the river, as well as the stock characteristics of returning wild and hatchery salmon, and the size of salmon and alewife runs through Milltown Fishway. The longer term goal is to develop and calibrate a production model of future salmon stock abundance in the St. Croix River."
