Abstract
"An archaeological survey of the Canadian shoreline of a portion of the St. Croix Recreational Waterway Area was conducted from July to late October, 1985. New Brunswick’s Community Improvement Corporation and the Province’s Department of Tourism, Recreation and Heritage, Archaeology Branch sponsored the continuing archaeological survey and testing of the area.
Two historic sites were revisited. BhDs 3 on the lower St. Croix estuary was test excavated and BjDv 16 was surveyed and clearly delineated for preservation. Three prehistoric sites were added to the New Brunswick inventory of sites and two previously recorded sites assessed. All five prehistoric sites were almost completely eroded and warrant no further investigation. Lumbering activities and a series of dams on the waterway have altered the landscape so that only a remnant of the rich cultural heritage of the area remains today.
It is recommended that BjDv 16, the Musquash Site, Skedaddle Ridge continue to be protected and that a research project on these skid antlers be undertaken in the near future before this portion of our heritage also disappears."
