Abstract
"Introduction

The St. Croix River Basin is defined geographically by two distinct but contiguous zones: the Chiputneticook Lakes and the St. Croix River. Forming a 100 mile border between the state of Maine and the province of New Brunswick, the water flows in a southeasterly direction through a blend of wooded hills, marshes, and glacial deposits. The surrounding land base is primarily owned by the Georgia-Pacific Company and is considered to be an industrial forest with abundant natural resources and numerous recreational opportunities. Spednic Lake, the least developed of the Chiputneticook Lakes, is reputed to be one of the best bass fishing lakes in the Northeast, while East Grand Lake hosts numerous summer cottages and sporting camps. The St. Croix River is known regionally for its easily negotiable whitewater and its natural beauty."
