Anadromous Restoration Cost-Benefit Assessment
Abstract
"The St. Croix has a long history of environmental abuse and biological misuse . That is, dams with inadequate or no fish passage facilities, pollution from paper mills, saw mills towns and other smaller industries has long prevailed. Biologically, both chain pickerel and smallmouth bass were introduced to the system many years ago and pose an added predation problem to effective salmon restoration efforts. The dams impoundments of themselves pose the usual slack water, sediment trap-spawning and nursery habitat destruction problems as well as outmigration impediments. The habitat has suffered severe damage in places some of which may be irreversible as in the biological instances of pickerel and bass introductions."
