Abstract
"Synopsis for 2012
2012 was an above average water year for the St. Croix River system. During the year, lake levels operated within normal levels and flows in the river provided satisfactory conditions for activities such as power generation, canoeing and kayaking, and for support of aquatic life.
In 2012 the water quality in the system remained in good condition.
The International St. Croix River Watershed Board continued to work in cooperation with the Passamaquoddy, the State of Maine, and interested parties to facilitate a resolution to the alewife passage issue in the St. Croix River Watershed.
The Board held its annual public meeting in the Basin on June 6th in Calais, Maine. The meeting included a presentation by the US National Marine Fisheries Service on the review process for the status of river herring (alewife and blueback herring) along the Atlantic coast under the US Endangered Species Act.
In 2012, the International Joint Commission (IJC) continued to support projects identified for funding in the Board's work plan. Two new projects were funded along with continued funding for alewife counts at Milltown Dam. One was the start of fisheries research project entitled "Trophic and marine interactions in the St. Croix River, Maine; status of diadromous fishes, connectivity, water quality, and food webs". The project lead is the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Maine Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Maine (Orono, Maine). The second was a study on lake water quality of the St. Croix Watershed. The St. Croix International Waterway Commission was the lead on the project."
