Abstract
"Introduction

March 20th of this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of H. E. “Ned” Lamb. In commemoration of the event , we are publishing this volume of his articles written for the Calais advertiser. Hopefully we will subsequently publish the remaining articles in additional volumes. Many people have told me that they really looked forward to seeing those articles bearing the “By H. E. Lamb” appear in the Advertiser. I know I have over the past three years of searching through microfilms at the Calais Free Library. Many of the articles came from scrapbooks, proof sheets, and typed documents in archives. Al Churchill collected many of them from the archives at the Washington County Courthouse. Our efforts resulted in a collection of nearly 300 feature articles plus some of “Milltown Diary” articles that contained historical information. Quite often Ned would write at the end of his articles “cut this out and save it” but he forgot to say “Write the date on it”. Many people did save the articles but few marked the date on them. In Ned's obituary, Arthur Kallenberg expresses the hope that the material that Ned had gathered be carefully preserved. This is another of our purposes, to preserve his works. Where we could, we have inserted images from the original photographs or negatives of the pictures that appeared in the paper. As you go through the book, it will be obvious which ones they are. If you have any of the original photographs of the poor quality pictures, please let us know as we would like to have a copy for our archives.

The title of this volume was inspired by Ned's untiring quest to document the history of the St. Croix Valley and the surrounding area. The Valley was his home, he was very proud of it and the accomplishments of the people who settled it. He had a deep love for it. If not for his writing, much of the information would have been lost to future generations. He was a champion for the cause of preserving St. Croix island and fortunately was able to see part of the results of his efforts. He would have loved to seen the progress that has been made in the past fifty years. His articles generated much interest in his readers and he received considerable feedback on his articles from them. He tied much of our local history to state, national and world history. Many of the articles showed that he was a tenacious researcher and tried to leave “no stone unturned”.

The first articles in this volume document the places on his aerial tour of the Valley in 1952, which had been a lifelong dream of his. Enjoy this trip up the Valley and then back down again with photographer, historian and journalist Ned Lamb.
