Abstract
"Overview

In 1979, the U.S. Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service completed a final list of rivers in Maine meeting the criteria of the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Two segments of the Aroostook River, a 17 mile stretch between Sheridan (Ashland) and Washburn and the 42 miles between the Aroostook's confluence with the Big Machias River and Millinocket Stream were included on the final list. In addition to these, the Big Machias River, from its confluence with the Aroostook River to Big Machias Lake (32miles), was also included. Two smaller sections of the Aroostook River extending from the Canadian border upriver to Salmon Brook, a distance of approximately 13 miles, were also included as recreation rivers. All of these segments were cited by the HCRS for their uniqueness as largely undeveloped high order rivers. These rivers would also appear to have other resources of high recreation and scenic value. A detailed study of the resources and problems of these rivers was needed to identify suitable protection and management strategies. The Department of conservation, Bureau of Parks and Recreation contracted with the Northern Maine Regional Planning Commission to undertake the study..."
