Abstract
"The protection of loons, and indeed any species, is a difficult challenge at best, but recent cases of chemical pollution can be added to the threats facing loons in Maine. Chemical contamination has revealed its insidious presence in wilderness lakes and, consequently, in the bodies of loons.
Recent studies have revealed significantly high levels of lead, mercury, and cadmium in the blood, tissues, and feathers of loons captured and tested in other states and provinces. These substances are often referred to as heavy metal sand are widely recognized as some of the most dangerous and persistent environmental contaminants..."
