Abstract
"...the people who prepared this report have identified many features of the New Brunswick landscape that are unique, rare and perhaps endangered. Why is it important that we try to preserve these floral and faunal species? Botanists and biologists understand that each occupies a vital spot in the subtle interconnections that make up life's delicate eco-complexes. For the rest of us, perhaps it is enough to remember the joy of a summer moment when we came upon a wildflower not noticed before resplendent in the morning dew. It has something to do with that Thoreau called 'the tonic of wilderness,' and it is important to our individuals and collective well-being.
We in New Brunswick have long lived with the myth of superabundance - the illusionary belief that we are so much surrounded by nature and wildness that we will never out of the stuff. But, in fact, we are capable of running out of anything, even trees, unless we take care and husband our precious reserves. And ultimately, I believe, we shall find that the greatest hope of New Brunswick's future is the wealth of nature that we find at our doorstep. On a planet increasingly crowded and polluted, we have a chance to remain a green oasis on the continent's edge, a haven of sensitivity and sensibility about our environment. But it won't happen automatically; we must act to protect and preserve..."
