Abstract
"The centerpiece for the Gulf of Maine Summit was the
report entitled Tides of Change Across the Gulf: An Environmental report on the Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy
here after called the Tides of Change). It examines how
environmental, economic and social trends are influencing three high-priority concerns in the Gulf region: land
use; contaminants and fisheries and aquaculture. Selected
indicators for these three topics help to provide historical
context, reveal current conditions and track progress. It is
hoped that subsequent reports will be produced to address
other priority issues. As leading issues are documented and
analyzed, a State of the Gulf report can be complied. The
issues and indicators included in this report emerged from
several recent workshops focused on Gulf monitoring and
indicators. The discussions were part of an ongoing effort
to link the region’s coastal and offshore monitoring programs in order to produce more reliable data and improve
environmental reporting. Summit participants were appreciative of the report and identified a variety of ways to
improve future issue-based reports."
