Domtar Industries, Inc. (Domtar) operates a pulp and paper mill located along the lower St. Croix River in Woodland, Maine. On July 1, 2004 a buried three foot diameter wastewater pipe burst, inadvertently discharging an estimated 3.5 million gallons of wastewater treatment system influent into the St. Croix River. The wastewater spilled into the river contained water and chemical residuals from mill pulp and papermaking processes, cooling waters, boiler blowdown, and other various sources...
Kleinschmidt conducted a biological survey of the St. Croix River downstream to the USGS river gage in Baring on July 2, 2004 at the request of Domtar. Kleinschmidt investigated potential impacts to resources along the St. Croix River from the burst pipe.
