Abstract
"During the period of European exploration and colonization of New Brunswick, the Chiputneticook-St. Croix Drainage System served as a vital communications link between this Saint John River, the Penobscot River, and Passamaquoddy Bay (Ganong 1899:242-245). Despite the frequent usage, the area around the lakes remains sparsely populated. By contrast, the distribution of archaeological sites on the Chiputneticook lakes dating to the precontact. Suggests that the Lake system, and Spednic Lake in particular, had experienced periods of relatively dense aboriginal population for several thousand years. Further, the historic canoe routes described by Ganong had probably been in use during prehistoric times for access to areas of important interior and coastal resources.
The object of the present paper is to outline the significance that Chiputneticook-St. Croix area to our interpretation of the occupational sequence and lifeways of the prehistoric peoples of New Brunswick and the Maine - Maritimes region. The paper is divided in three parts, the first being a physical description of the chip phonetic lakes and Saint Croix drainage areas, the second providing a summary of previous archaeological research in the area, and the third being a discussion of the archaeological evidence from the area relating to three broad, regionally recognized, prehistoric time periods."
