Abstract
"This report presents a historical overview of the project area and an analysis of the historic architectural resources identified during the architectural survey. Survey methods included archival research and literature review, oral interviews, and field documentation and photography. Access to architectural resources was limited to the public right-of-way along public roads. Private property was not entered, and private roads or drives were not used. The survey area consisted of linear corridors and total acreage surveyed was approximately 24 acres. The survey identified 30 historic architectural resources within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the proposed modernization project. Fifteen of these resources have been recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The remaining 15 architectural resources do not appear to possess a sufficient degree of age, significance, and/or integrity necessary for NRHP consideration. Many of the historic resources in the project area are of particular interest because of their association with the F. Shaw & Brothers Tannery, which is significant in Maine's Industrial history. Five architectural resources associated by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission to contribute to a future multiple property listing which would also include the archeological manifestation of the tannery (ME 0552-001).
